Jonathan Coleclough and Andrew Chalk are both drone-meisters of long standing and, in Sumac, a single-piece, 71-minute opus, they have constructed a deep, persistent drone that rewards close listening and encourages total absorption. Sound sources appear to include bowed cymbals (or other metals) and there's a strong sense of air passing slowly through brass, although electronic modification makes any such ascription problematic at best. Nothing much changes, no truly momentous events occur
It has been categorized into the following Sound pages: Dark. Though sometimes predicable, the album continues to present new variations on its dark sonic loomings, providing the listener with just enough suspense to hold interest. It's another limited release, so it may be rough riding for those wishing to be in hot pursuit.

Chalk was never happy with the Hic Sunt Leones version; and thus his reissue of the album returns to the original version found on the cassette, now gloriously remastered in its entirety. For those persnickety types, the 17 minutes or so which concluded the Hic Sunt Leones version is not here; but that is a minor loss compared to the pinnacle of drone-based minimalism found here. There was his ephemeral album Sumac in collaboration with Jonathan Coleclough, there was the first Mirror album Eye Of The Storm, and there's East Of The Sun. Very dark without becoming unbearably cold, East Of The Sun is a constant bloom of nocturnal frequencies, whose origins may be thoroughly blurred bass guitar or possibly some resonant artifact from Chalk's acoustic work in Organum.
Andrew Chalk (アンドリュー チョーク) has been active since 1985 as Ferial Confine and has worked with many associates over the years, such as David Jackman (in Organum), Vortex Campaign, The New Blockaders, Darren Tate (in Ora), Giancarlo Toniutti, Jonathan Coleclough, and Christoph Heemann (in Mirror). He has now released a number of releases under his own name which have won widespread acclaim, on labels such as Robot Records, Christoph Heemann's Streamline label and his own Faraway Press label.
