Various - Tribute To Last Days Of April FLAC album

Last Days of April is an indie pop band from Stockholm, Sweden. Last Days of April formed in 1996. The band found some underground success with their first demo release. A full-length was issued in 1997, then an EP on Bad Taste Records in 1998. Their sophomore effort, Rainmaker, was released in both Europe (on Bad Taste) and Japan (on Straight Up Records), and the group toured with The Promise Ring and The Bufferins in Europe.

With a '60s jangle that would suit the Anniversary, Sweden's Last Days of April abandons their hardcore roots for a gentle pop sensibility that recalls the Kings of Convenience and Turin Brakes. Only "Playerin" seems to resort to punk rock momentum, and that song is excellent nonetheless.

If every tribute album has skippable tracks, then they must also contain some unskippable tracks: hidden gems among the pop-cultural debris. Arguably the most obscure artist to get the tribute album treatment in the 1990s, Skip Spence had been a drummer for Jefferson Airplane before drug addiction and mental illness led to his. Toad the Wet Sprocket may be exactly the last band you’d expect - or want - on a Kiss tribute, but they turn Rock & Roll All Nite into a melancholy daydream about rockstardom, emphasizing the want over the rock, the roll, and the all night. You don’t quite believe they stay up past 10 pm, but that’s the pre-teen dream, isn’t it?

The album plays the like the psychic interior of a feminist cannibal film, romantic and yearning, poetic and dangerous. I’d like to believe they spent the last seven years in outer space and the album is their findings of what pop music sounds like on other planets. It has moments that sound like they come from a cyber dystopian future where Sade is still making music, but it’s also deeply rooted in right this very moment, particularly when the legend Lonnie Holley emerges to read dark spoken word.
