After her husband's death, Alice continued the spiritual journey she started with John a few years before his untimely end. Indian spirituality an. .

Like her other recordings from the Warner Bros. period, Transcendence, is a late album created from various musical notions Alice Coltrane was exploring, rather than conceived as a whole as her Impulse material was. These eight tracks are all based in Indian themes.

Years later, Alice Coltrane contributed harp to Tyner’s 1972 album Extensions. Four years before Yoko Ono allegedly broke up the Beatles, thereby earning the scorn of all future generations of rock fans, Alice was accused of breaking up the greatest jazz group of the mid-’60s. But Alice, if anything, was the catalyst for Coltrane’s greatest music, abetting and inspiring his spiritual quest to realize a universal sound. In an era when national, racial, and gender identity were highly contentious, Alice Coltrane was aiming for transcendence. The Coltranes’ universalist view, which dates back to A Love Supreme, came into focus for Alice Coltrane in 1969, when she was introduced to a figure who clarified her spiritual path and resolve, Swami Satchidananda.

Alice Coltrane was better known as an organist and pianist prior to this groundbreaking 1971 album, but it was here that she introduced her cosmic-harp playing to the world.

1977's "Transcendence" was Alice Coltrane's last jazz studio album until her pleasantly surprising return in 2004. Coltrane's Warner Brothers years are marked by a decidingly diverse bent, with orchestral arrangements being common. This album features both a string quartet on several tracks and a vocal choir on several others. What would have been the first side of the disc is all instrumetnal- "Radhe-Shyam" and "Transcedence" feature Coltrane's harp augmented by strings.
