On a session-to-session basis, in slightly varying combinations, drummer Sly Dunbar, percussionist Uziah "Sticky" Thompson, bassist Robbie Shakespeare, keyboardist Wally Badarou, guitarists Barry Reynolds and Mikey Chung, and engineer Alex Sadkin made up the in-house team at Island founder Chris Blackwell's Compass Point, a studio located just outside Nassau in the Bahamas. As Blackwell recalls in David Katz's excellent liner notes to this set, titled Funky Nassau: The Compass Point Story 1980-1986, "I wanted a new, progressive sounding band.

She was paying respect to the in-house rhythm section of Compass Point studios, the Bahamas recording studio founded by Island records' Chris Blackwell. This compilation brings together tracks from the studio's most fertile period, when reggae musicians connected with artful pop bands and disco artists; the results translated well to hip New York dancefloors and often crossed over to the charts.

During the early 80s, the marketing term "world music was coined to enable a number of next-generation styles of pop music from around the world to reach an aggregate audience. While the term is mostly untenable as a realistic musical description, the scene at Compass Point Studios in Nassau was one that inspired visions of global musical cooperation. Founded by then Island Records boss Chris Blackwell in 1977, it was a destination for the top acts in the world, such as the Rolling Stones and AC/DC.
