Tha Carter V is Lil Wayne’s twelfth studio album. It was originally planned to be released in 2013 (as well as May 5, 2014, October 28, 2014, and December 9, 2014) but it was held-back due by Cash Money label head Birdman as Wayne wanted off the label after Birdman reportedly violated the contract’s terms regarding the album. Wayne battled the contract in court and eventually won the lawsuit on June 6, 2018.

We can only imagine what Tha Carter V might have sounded like in 2014 when Lil Wayne first announced it was finished. We’ll never know how many Trinidad James features that shelved draft of the album might have included, or what kind of play on Blurred Lines Wayne might have made, or which words he might have rhymed with Gotye. That album probably wouldn’t have been very good, and it almost certainly wouldn’t have been as rewarding or revealing as the belated final product that a humbled Wayne presented on his 36th birthday, after the four most trying years of his career.

Tha Carter V is the twelfth studio album by American rapper Lil Wayne. It is due to be released on September 28, 2018 by Young Money Entertainment and Republic Records. Stream and download below. Lil Wayne finally delivered his long-awaited 'Tha Carter V' album on Friday (Sept. 27). After initially slating the project for release in 2014, Weezy was involved in a tumultuous lawsuit with Cash Money Records in a fight for his creative freedom. The suit was eventually settled for an undisclosed sum between Wayne, Cash Money, and Universal Music Group in June. The 36-year-old became the sole proprietor of Young Money Entertainment as a result of the grueling lawsuit. Tha Carter V's release should serve as a celebratory moment, lifting the burden that muzzled Tunechi in recent years. C5 notches feature appearances from Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, XXXTentacion, and more. With Wayne's legacy very much solidified, Tha Carter V will still play an integral role in spawning the next phase of the 504 native's illustrious career. I’m very much a perfectionist.

The best thing about Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter V is that it exists. It finds the man who once called himself the best rapper alive – and who, for a few years in the late 2000s, indisputably lived up to that boast – finally emerging from five years of personal and professional chaos. A 2014 Drake vs. Lil Wayne co-headlining tour unexpectedly evolved into a poignant torch-passing affair. But as Cash Money blocked efforts like 2015’s Free Weezy Album and 2017’s Dedication 6 from appearing on streaming services, forcing fans to scour for online downloads, Lil Wayne began to appear like a relic from the Datpiff era, his indefatigable work habits falling on increasingly deaf ears. If the celebratory reception surrounding the long-delayed Tha Carter V proves one thing, it is how much Lil Wayne is truly beloved. He is as much of a hero to a certain generation of rap fans as Jay Z and Rakim once were.

Tha Carter V is a significant moment in Wayne’s career for more than just his difficult time putting it out. The album is his first to not be released by Cash Money Records, ending a run that lasted two decades. Check out Wayne’s Carter V stream, cover art.

Lil Wayne's new album is out! After years of delays, the 36-year-old rapper released his highly-anticipated Tha Carter V album. it’s been over seven years since Wayne released his last album – Tha Carter IV – and fans have been patiently waiting for the latest album to drop. I don’t know what it’s setting me up for - some big comeback, or maybe some big fall back or whatever - but it’s setting me up for something, and I’m ready, Wayne told Billboard earlier this month.
