Twentieth-century art-and what it became as modern art-began with modernism in the late nineteenth century. Nineteenth-century movements of Post-Impressionism (Les Nabis), Art Nouveau and Symbolism led to the first twentieth-century art movements of Fauvism in France and Die Brücke ("The Bridge") in Germany. Fauvism in Paris introduced heightened colour into figurative painting. Die Brücke strove for emotional Expressionism.

The 19th century was a period marked by major political upheavals in several parts of the world. The century is however best remembered as the era which witnessed the birth of some of the greatest-and most notorious-political figures to have ever emerged in human history. The 19th century also saw rampant war, widespread violence, and systematic abuse of certain sections of the society. This in turn gave birth to social rights activists, civil rights activists, and feminists like Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King J. Rosa Parks, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Margaret Fuller who fought for the betterment of the society.

Literature of the 19th century refers to world literature produced during the 19th century. The range of years is, for the purpose of this article, literature written from (roughly) 1799 to 1900. Many of the developments in literature in this period parallel changes in the visual arts and other aspects of 19th-century culture.

By the early 19th century men's fashions had also undergone a radical change. The coat still finished in long tails at the back but was cut higher in front. The waist-length square-cut waistcoat showed beneath it. The lining of the shoulders and upper chest of the coat was sometimes quilted to improve the fit. In the early 19th century some dandies wore boned corsets to give them a small waist. Gradually men adopted long trousers rather than knee breeches. Trousers became increasingly fashionable in the first quarter of the 19th century

The literary giants of the age captured this dynamic century from many angles. In poetry, novels, essays, short stories, journalism, and other genres these writers provided a varied and exciting understanding of a world in flux. Washington Irving (1783–1859), a native New Yorker, is considered to be the first American man of letters. He made his name with a satirical masterpiece, "A History of New York," and was acclaimed as a master of the American short story, for which he created such memorable characters as Rip Van Winkle and Ichabod Crane. Irving's writings were highly influential in the early 19th century, and his collection "The Sketch Book" was widely read. And one of Irving's early essays gave New York City its enduring nickname of "Gotham.

Voting in the 19th century was a privilege and far not a right. To be able to vote, in some places of Great Britain you had to own a large cooking pot. The people who accomplished this were known as potwallopers. In theory, the pot was to be taken as proof that they had a hearth big enough to contain it, or what is the same, that they could wallop a pot. This was intended to mean that they were first-class citizens.

Béla Schäffer was a German 19th Century painter who was born in 1815.
