They signed with a major in 1977, exceptional point for a french rock band. The first album was welcomed by radio stations (there was only 4 large band frequencies stations at this time, free FM radio stations didn't exist yet).

A First Meeting, Part One: The First Day of School In the town of Summervale, there lived a young StarEater girl, her name was Oriel. In most ways, Oriel was a normal girl like any her age. She had a mother and father who loved her very much; she lived in a cozy house and had plenty of toys to play with.

Physical Graffiti is not the hardest or most influential Zeppelin album. It’s not even their best. But it’s arguably the most essential. John Wetton’s tersely macho posture suits the lyrics of Richard Palmer-James, who matches the album’s opening squall with the rude awakening of, Health food faggot. Even The Night Watch skips the mawkishness of other Crimson ballads. The live tracks are mostly improvised, which is one reason Bill Bruford renamed the album Braless and Slightly Slack. But the pieces are mostly chafe-free, cropped down to spiky instrumentals that highlight the Robert Fripp-David Cross frontline of sharp guitar and under-the-breath violin and mellotron, all gnashed against Bruford’s clatterwork.
The album's hypnotic sprawl centered around producer Prince Paul's sampleriffic beats (see the disco-rap classic "A Roller Skate Jam Named 'Saturdays'"); the guys also took on some brave subject matter (on the disturbing incest tale "Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa") while preserving their dextrous, clever rhyme styles. The title track is a prayer for revived idealism, and the album closes with "My Best Was Never Good Enough," a contemptuous dismissal of the Gump-style clichés people lean on, however irrationally, to get by. Surveying an American landscape littered with crushed hopes, Springsteen stares down the darkness but fights it only to a draw. That a rocker of this magnitude would make a folk album this forlorn spits in the eye of the rising Dow., Photos: Bruce Springsteen Artifacts From His Four-Decade Career.
