David Bowie & Tony Visconti are the producers of the album, and it features percussion (performed by James Murphy). Visconti stated that he and Bowie listened to a lot of Kendrick Lamar, specifically his second LP, To Pimp a Butterfly while working on the album. He told Rolling Stone: We wound up with nothing like that, but we loved the fact that Kendrick was so open-minded and he didn’t do a straight-up hip-hop record. On the 10th of January, (only 2 days after the album was released), the legend himself, David Bowie died at the age of 69 in Manhattan, New York after battling cancer in secret for 18 months. Since we were presented with the sad news of his unfortunate death, several have looked deeper into the album and noticed that Blackstar explores the theme of mortality. Several celebrities around the world have paid tribute to the legendary Ziggy Stardust.

If you looked at the cover of David Bowie's Blackstar and wondered why there wasn't more going on, visually speaking, graphic designer Jonathan Barnbrook would like to explain. Barnbrook delved into the design process behind Blackstar during a recent interview with Dezeen (via Consequence of Sound), admitting that he was aware of a certain amount of blowback from fans after the record's cover was revealed - and arguing that people who just see symbols against a white background aren't really looking closely enough. But I think there is a misunderstanding about the simplicity. As was so often the case with Bowie, the arguably inscrutable Blackstar cover was the end result of real work, careful discussion, and a clear vision. This was a man who was facing his own mortality," explained Barnbrook.
David Bowie: The Last Five Years was produced and directed by Francis Whately as a follow-up to his acclaimed David Bowie: Five Years which was broadcast on BBC Two in 2013. This new film features rare and unseen archive footage and early Bowie audio interviews, including the original vocal which Bowie recorded for Lazarus, his last release before his death, which has never been heard before. Drummer Woody, best known for his work with Bowie as part of The Spiders from Mars, will talk listeners through the recording of each album and will play some of his favourite tracks. The four albums Woody recorded with Bowie are The Man Who Sold the World (1970), Hunky Dory (1971), The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972), and Aladdin Sane (1973).
David Bowie’s final album, Blackstar, debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, giving the late music legend his first No. 1 album. Bowie died on Jan. 10 of cancer, two days after the release of the album. Blackstar was issued through ISO/Columbia Records and earned 181,000 equivalent album units in the . during the week ending Jan. 14, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 174,000 were in pure album sales - Bowie’s biggest sales week for an album since Nielsen began electronically tracking point-of-sale music purchases in 1991.
For all its odd twists, the album proceeds logically, unfolding with stately purpose and sustaining a dark, glassy shimmer. It is music for the dead of night but not moments of desolation; it's created for the moment when today is over but tomorrow has yet to begin.
