Homer Rodeheaver (1880–1955) was a trombone-playing, baritone-voiced evangelist who served as music director for the preacher Billy Sunday. Rodeheaver was known for his charismatic nature and sense of humor. He introduced jaunty, rhythmic songs into his programs and often led choirs with his trombone playing. He began recording in 1913, making many sides for Victor. He was also a music publisher and the owner of a gospel record company, Rainbow.
Redirected from Homer Alvan Rodeheaver). Homer Alvan Rodeheaver (October 4, 1880 – December 18, 1955) was an American evangelist, music director, music publisher, composer of gospel songs, and pioneer in the recording of sacred music. Born in Cinco Hollow in Hocking County, Ohio, he was taken as a child to Jellico in eastern Tennessee and there worked with his father in the lumber mill business.
Two members of his campaign staff, Homer Rodeheaver and Virginia Asher, are thought to be the first to record the tune in 1921. Johnny Cash was such a fan, he recorded four different versions on the albums: Sings Precious Memories, Sings with the BC Goodpasture Christian School, Believe in Him (as a duet with Jessi Colter) and Return to the Promised Land (as a duet with June Carter Cash).
