Glenn Gould with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic (from a concert of April 6, 1962, famous for Bernstein's introductory remarks to the audience in which he said he was not in agreement with Gould's "remarkably broad tempi and. frequent departures from Brahms' dynamic indications"). Van Cliburn with Erich Leinsdorf and the Boston Symphony Orchestra (1964). Brahms and Avins, p. 288. Publishers liked piano four hands arrangements, which could be sold to customers owning only one piano; later, Brahms's Hungarian Dances for piano four hands were highly profitable for him and the publisher, in that case Simrock.

Title: Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 Artist(s): Leonard Bernstein & The New York Philharmonic Glenn Gould (Pianist) Recording Info: Transferred from Columbia 4-track tapeDate of Recording: 03/20/1961 Venue: Manhattan Center, New York. Strangely enough, the prosaic one here is Bernstein. Listen for example to Gould’s sublime transition at 09:45 as he trims his double forte down to pianissimo over the 2-bar trills and slides effortlessly into Gouldian lyrical mode: celli and basses steal in beautifully pizzicato with the main 4-note motif but four bars later Bernstein already sounds, well, prosaic. Gould’s Andante con moto is no Orpheus in Hades, but for the way he refuses to stick to piano, sounds almost defiant.

Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 was the piece with which Glenn Gould made his orchestral debut when he was 13, and he performed it more often than any of the composer's other concertos. This recording, with Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic, was made in 1961. Gould's performance is thoughtful, nuanced, and not at all eccentric. What's most striking about his playing is the degree to which he's able to bring out the individuality of the contrapuntal lines. His performance is extremely graceful.
