The Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (OSR) is a Swiss symphony orchestra, based in Geneva at the Victoria Hall. In addition to symphony concerts, the OSR performs as the opera orchestra in productions at the Grand Théâtre de Genève. Ernest Ansermet founded the OSR in 1918, together with Paul Lachenal, with a contingent of 48 players and a season of six months' duration. Besides Swiss musicians, the OSR players initially came from other countries, including Austria, France, Germany and Italy.
Bizet: Carmen and L'Arlésienne Suites; 1LP 180g 33rpm standard sleeve; Manufacturer: Speakers Corner; Release Date: 2012-05-21. Georges Bizet: Carmen Suite, L'Arlésienne Suite - Orchestre de la Suisse Romande conducted by Ernest Ansermet. The 19th-century suites with their collection of favourite songs and instrumental excerpts from operas are the clear forerunners of today’s 'Best-Of' culture. The "Carmen Suite" was assembled after Bizet’s death and brought the operatic masterpiece into the concert hall. The overture is fresh and rousing, the toreador theme marches in proudly and purposefully, followed by the destiny motif in the minor key which burns itself into ones ear and mind.
His Decca recordings with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande have assumed legendary and benchmark status for much of the French repertoire. His double good fortune was to be at his peak in the mid-1950s at the dawn of stereo recording; and for his record label to be Decca, renowned then as now for unrivaled sound recording quality, underpinned by the famous Decca tree microphone set- up, sensitive engineers and producers, and intelligent choice of recording venues. CD 18 BIZET Carmen - suite (1958) L'Arlesienne (1958) Patrie - ouverture (1954). CD 19 BIZET Symphony in C major (1960) Jeux d'enfants (1960) La jolle fille de Perth -suite (1960) OFFENBACH Orphee aux enfers - ouverture (1960) La belle Helene - ouverture (1960) HEROLD Zampa - ouverture (1960). CD 20 DELIBES Coppelia - ballet (1957). CD 21 DELIBES Coppelia - continued Sylvia - suite (1959).
The first one comprises music by French composers amongst them the very popular Arlésienne suites by George Bizet in performances by the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande which has a long standing reputation for its performances of French music. Next years this album will be followed by an album with music by German composers, and in 2015 by Russian composers.
The 'Carmen Suite' was assembled after Bizet's death and brought the operatic masterpiece into the concert hall. With every bar it becomes obvious that this suite is not so much a series of excerpts but rather the true substance of its creator's musical ideas
L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Ernest Ansermet. Release Date: 15th Feb 2010. Catalogue No: ELQ4800457. Bizet's Carmen was misunderstood at its premiere in 1875. The Opera-Comique was a place where respectable families could be entertained, and where virginal daughters could be introduced to blameless sons with marriage in mind. No one expected to see uncouth gypsies, dirty smugglers and vulgar cigarette girls on its stage, let alone unvarnished human passions and murder, as Bizet so vividly portrayed them in Carmen! This 2CD set brings together Ansermet's complete Bizet stereo recordings for Decca, are good-natured and piquant without being showy for showiness's sake
