Al-Jadida is an album by the Lebanese oud player and composer Rabih Abou-Khalil, fusing traditional Arab music with jazz, which was recorded in 1990 and released on the Enja label the following year.

Rabih Abou-Khalil ‎– Al-Jadida. Label: Enja Records ‎– ENJA 6090 2. Format: CD, Album, Digipak. I first encountered Rabih via Embryo, and then his album BETWEEN DAWN & DUSK that featured Christian "Embryo" Burchard as a guest - a delightful blend of Arabian music, jazz and lots of other things, a natural extension on Embryo's pioneering world fusion. But, it was a great surprise to find this album on Enja - I never thought I'd ever own an Enja release! - and featuring Sonny Fortune no less! Not so surprising was Glen Moore (from Oregon) and Ramesh Shotham (of Karnataka College of Percussion and a previous collaborator with Rabih and Embryo) being featured.

RABIH ABOU-KHALIL is a Prog Folk, Progressive Rock artist from Lebanon. Rabih Abou-Khalil is undeniably a world musician, while his eclectic style, traditional instrumentation and innovative compositions are a testament to a creative mind. He deserves a place in the ProgArchives for those talents. Bio by Bob Moore (aka ClemofNazareth)<. RABIH ABOU-KHALIL Videos (YouTube and more).

Rabih Abou-Khalil, among the rare Arabic musicians who have recorded and played extensively with jazz musicians, successfully navigates the middle ground between traditional North African sounds and hard bop. Besides the leader's oud and flute, alto saxophonist Sonny Fortune provides the blues bite; bassist Glen Moore, the rhythmic connection, and percussionists Ramesh Shotham and Nabil Khaiat, provide the African seasoning.

There is only one fellow Arabian: Nabil Khaiat, a very fine percussionist counterbalancing Ramesh's Indian percussives. Rabih himself is an oud player, the oud being a lute-like instrument but sounding distinctly Eastern, and Rabih's mastery of it is second to none, no less his compositional skills - this is very close to Embryo in fact, particularly the ethnic jams on EMBRYO'S REISE, and Sonny Fortune fits in amazingly well where you'd normally expect to hear Charlie Mariano or Edgar Hofmann. Here we are treated to a series of flowing almost open-ended improvised interactive compositions, where in true Eastern tradition the solo's kind of slide over each other, play against one another, creating a cornucopia of instrumental delights, everything placed perfectly throughout - in fact the musicianship is no less than breathtaking, one can't help joining in with the infectious rhythms and emotive energy, and the individual tracks seem to move one to the next, as if a homogeneous whole. A grand unique festival of musical delights. From my review in Audion #21, published in May 1992
