The Good Earth is the fifth studio album released by Manfred Mann's Earth Band in 1974. Its opening song is a cover of "Give Me the Good Earth", written by Gary Wright and released on his 1971 solo album Footprint, while tracks 2 and 3 were originally by Australian progressive rock band Spectrum. Early owners of each copy of The Good Earth were entitled to rights over 1 square foot of the earth situated at Llanerchyrfa in the County of Brecon, in Wales

Chris Thompson had left the band after their previous album Criminal Tango and the band was now at three permanent members. After this album the Earth Band name was retired until 1991. Liner notes about the different recordings on the release, special thanks and an overview on the Manfred Mann's Earth Band catalogue on pages 10 and 11 appear.
Tracks 1 to 4 were recorded live in Sydney 1972 at The Roundhouse Theatre, The University of New South Wales and filmed by the Australian Broadcasting Commission for their 'Get To Know' programme.
Track 5 is an interview from the national ABC television taped during the same tour.
Track 6 is sourced from Australian TV as well and the only footage of Manfred Mann Chapter Three located so far.
Tracks 7 to 12 were recorded by the Rockpalast programme at the Burg Herzberg festival in summer 2005.
Track 12 also contains an instrumental version of the song "For You" by Bruce Springsteen and before the song "Mighty Quinn" starts, which is not mentioned in the tracklistings on the release but added for completeness in the submission.
